This mountain has a Tibetan name, which means “the mountain of many sacred thunderbolts”. This mountain is considered to be a holy mountain for Buddhists. Climbing permission was given only in 1964, and it was not climbed until 1981.
Gauri-Sanker (7 134 m)
This single Mountain has two peaks and two names because the Hindus believe that the mountain looks like the pair of Gods Shiva and Gouri. This holy mountain was restricted for expeditions till 1977. The American and Nepali expedition summit in 1979.
Lhotse (8 516 m)
This mountain lies south of Everest and received his name by the Sherpas. Lhotse means literally “South Peak”. The first ascent of this mountain took place in 1956 by Swiss Expedition.
Mount Everest (8848 m/29030ft)
This Mountain was discovered in 1852 as the highest mountain of the world and is named after Sir George Everest an English surveyor. Sagarmatha is the name given by the Nepali citizens which means, “Mother of the skies”. In Tibet Mount Everest is called Chomolongma which means “Mother of the world”. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgey Sherpa were the first summiteers of Mount Everest on May 25, 1953.
